Stay Strong in the Lord

Today’s readings are from Hebrews 10:26-39 and 1 Kings 1

When I first started to read the passage from Hebrew, I gulped. Particularly verse 26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. Gulp again!

We don’t often talk about God’s judgment. I was reminded of those of my extended family, the people around me, friends, neighbours, those who have heard about Jesus’ saving grace, but continue to walk away from God. Is that their fate? Yes, says the author of Hebrews. Verse 30 For we know him who said, ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay,’ and again, ‘The Lord will judge his people.’ 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. I am reminded to pray harder for the lost around me.

Reading on we are reminded of the trials which God’s people had endured in the past. The people were encouraged to endure in the face of terrible trials such as insult and persecution, imprisonment and confiscation of property. They even joyfully accepted the confiscation of their own property because they knew that they had better and lasting possessions.

It is also encouraging to read how the people supported one another: at other times you stood side by side with those who were so treated. 34 You suffered along with those in prison. I see that happening at FAC on a regular basis.

If you are suffering in any way today, I urge you to not throw away your confidence, but remember verse 36 persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. Pray for guidance, for help, for God’s peace and strength to move forward. Stay strong in the Lord and focused on him. Verse 39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

Thank you Jesus for all you have done for me, for all of us at FAC and the people around us. I pray Lord for the lost people. I ask that you make known personally to each of us those who need to come to know you. Show us how you want us to reach them with your life-saving word. Help us to stay strong and focused on you. Help us endure life with confidence, knowing you are in control and will always be with us. Amen.

  1. Thanks Iris. The problem is is that no matter how hard we try (and we must try) we ARE going to keep sinning because we are ‘cracked pots’. But luckily, ‘If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.’ (1 John 1:9) God will keep us safe.
But as you say, what about those around us ‘who have heard about Jesus’ saving grace, but continue to walk away from God?’ That is the scary bit.
I have two daughters who despite growing up with Sunday School and church do not believe in God or Jesus. Both say they pretended they did for many years so as not to upset me.
    What will become of them?
All I can do is prayer for them and leave them to God,
    I like your prayer:
‘Show us how you want us to reach them with your life-saving word. Help us to stay strong and focused on you. Help us endure life with confidence, knowing you are in control and will always be with us. Amen’.
I must charge forward with life remembering Verse 39: ‘But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.’

  2. Thank you Iris. I must say that the first couple of verses must surely grap our attention. This is a very clear warning to Christians who misuse grace. Who have taken costly grace and turned it into cheap grace. Grace is never cheap. It cost God His Son. In this day of political correctness it is a reminder for those who teach not to forget to warn Gods people of trampling the Blood of Christ. A bit of fire and brimstone to bring repentance into play. For those who are guilty forgiveness can be found at the foot of the cross today before it is too late. And we can’t fall into the trap of thinking that time is on our side. May the fear of God fall upon FAC and may He bring to life through His Spirit a desire for holiness in the believers life. For without holiness you will not see the Lord.
If the Holy Spirit lives in a believers heart the DESIRE to sin will be less and less. The closer you are to God the more aware of your sin you will become. It won’t be sin that is so visible but more sin in attitude of heart and mind. Praise God for Jesus our perfect sacrifice.
