It’s All Over Bar The Praising

Today’s Reading 2 Chronicles 2 and Rev 18:1-20

“After this I saw another Angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. With a mighty voice he shouted…” (Rev 18:1-2).

I wonder after reading this verse, what you are thinking? For example, what might he shout? What might be the response by those who hear his voice? So let us get into the picture. Here is the mightiest empire in the world about to be addressed. Here is a radical, exiled Jewish Christian prophet who is just about to write a press release this great city.

Brothers and sisters it will not be good news. To put it simply, it is all over bar the praising! “Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!” Maybe from where you are sitting what follows in these verses is not so astonishing. But such a veiled attack on Rome could have brought the early church more attention and more persecution. What follows is an act full of boldness and courage. The whole chapter paints the picture of a people whose arrogance makes them believe that they are indestructible. Read vs 9-17.

I can’t stop thinking about what other Christians would have been thinking with such a bold and public stand against violence and injustice! Too often we are embarrassed by the boldness of others. We focus on damage control and spend most of our thoughts thinking, “I can’t believe what they just said!”

We know of a king who is going to return, we know of God’s mercy to us, we know when those moments come when we too should speak up. Let us more and more be willing to speak up for those with no voice as we wait the return of the king.
