A mighty fortress

Psalm 46

A song of trust in God, even if disaster strikes.

Can you join the chorus  that claim  God is their  strength and refuge – whatever happens? Whatever happens, we will not fear. Pray that our doubts, self preoccupation and anxieties do not rob us of this trust.

May we  make use of God; seek refuge in Him, seek His strength for living , amidst the chaos of nature (v2) and the nations (v6). May we experience knowing God (v10), our design and destiny, and be glad that He ‘is with us’ (v7,11) –  in Jesus.

May we join the chorus singing  Martin Luther’s hymn, inspired by this Psalm…

‘A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper He amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing…

‘If we in our strength confide, our striving would be losing’, but ‘Christ Jesus – it is He  who must win the battle’.

‘And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God has willed his truth to triumph through us…

‘Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill; God’s truth abideth still; His kingdom is forever.’

  1. Thank you Phil. What a great song to have rolling around in my head today! I’d like to think I won’t be fearful when disasters strike (as if!) but that my trust in my faithful God will uphold me.
