Psalm 117

Psalm 117

Praise the Lord, all you nations;

    extol him, all you peoples.
For great is his love towards us,
    and the faithfulness of the Lord endures for ever.

Praise the Lord.

If you have always wanted to memorise a chapter in the Bible, but never known where to start, Psalm 117 is an excellent place! Psalm 117 is the shortest chapter in the Bible. (It is also said that Psalm 117 is the middle chapter of the Bible, being 595th of a total of 1189 chapters.)

It certainly would be easier to start now with Psalm 117 than to put off your memory work a couple of weeks and start with Psalm 119, since Psalm 119 is the longest chapter of the Bible. Psalm 119 commends committing scripture to memory; it protects (Psalm 119:11) and comforts (Psalm 119:52).

Now, back to Psalm 117. The story unfolds like this.

    Praise the Lord, all you nations;

The call to praise is not just to the worshipping Israelites. The praise of God is not restricted to one nation or group of people. In the literary style common in the Psalms, the idea is then repeated:

    extol him, all you peoples.

Next, two key aspects of God’s character are developed. God’s love is large, his faithfulness eternal.

    For great is his love toward us,

    and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.

In light of this, let’s

    Praise the Lord!
