In chapter 1 and 2 of 1 John, the apostle has a message for us about truth and lies.
Some words of warning about lies:
If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practise the truth.
Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.
Some words of encouragement about truth:
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected.
it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because[a] the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.
I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.
We should be on guard and expect to find lies in the broader church and also in our own fellowship. Amazingly, Jesus said this about false believers:
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
Even those who appear so convincingly to be believers may not have a heart for Christ!
While we are forewarned about false disciples, we can take heart if we walk in the light. We can ensure we do so if we heed his final advice:
I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you. But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.
May we all stand firm in the truth as we abide in him.
