Psalm 136

Psalm 136

 Psalm 136:1 (New International Version)

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
    His love endures for ever.

Give thanks to the Lord. Why? For he is good. How so? His love endures for ever.

God is good. He is not neutral, a ‘god’ who sits in heaven minding his own business, not giving a thought to life on earth, not caring one way or the other, uninvolved, indifferent. And he is certainly not bad, a ‘god’ who delights in evil, who acts with malice, who causes harm. Just the opposite. God is good. He might have been bad, he might have been neutral, but in fact he is good, and for this we should be profoundly grateful. Thank God, God is good!

God’s goodness is shown in himself, in his greatness. God’s goodness is shown in his wonder-working, his creation, the sun, the moon and the stars. God’s goodness is shown in his rescue of his people from confinement and his leading them to contentment, steering them past physical danger and human attacks along the way. God’s goodness is shown in his solicitude, his protection, his providence.

God’s love was demonstrated yesterday and is evident today and will be shown tomorrow. God’s love is not intermittent or ephemeral. God’s love endures. It endures for ever.
