Know thine enemy

Just a quick thought this morning.

Reading through 1 Samuel 7:3-17, I realised I didn’t really know what all the various idols were that the Israelites were worshipping in place of God. However by doing a bit of web research I found that there really isn’t a consensus on the function of many of the idols. Perhaps undefinable idol worship was the Philistines and Israelites version of consumerism. You simply went God shopping for whatever you needed, or better still defined the idol you had to be whatever you needed it to be.

This idea seemed to make sense given one website’s definition:

“Astaroth (or Ashtaroth) is a demon who seduces by means of laziness, vanity, and rationalized philosophies.”

Laziness – god is whatever you need it to be to suit you
Vanity – because these idols are all about serving your needs
Rationalised Philosophies – because you can rationalise any behaviour if you really need to.

This is certainly the god I would turn to if I wanted to justify and satisfy my self seeking nature!

  1. Thanks Lachlan. You entitled your writing, “Know Your Enemy” and the three things you mentioned are indeed our enemies. Laziness, Vanity and Rationalised Philosophies. These things can creep into our lives without us noticing as we are so used to accepting the status quo as our entitlement. Thank you God that you have chosen to give us life in the wealthy 20% of the world in 2016.(For one thing I am so grateful I live in the time and place of modern dentists!) Help us to remember that with great wealth comes great responsibility. But as Connie said yesterday, we must not judge others. Only God knows our hearts.
