This is only a short passage but there is lots in it. There are three parts to the passage:
- Jesus reveals to his disciples (I think for the first time) that He is the Christ, the Messiah.
- He then explains what this means – simply and clearly. That as Messiah, He has to suffer, die, and be raised to life three days later. The disciples, especially Peter, don’t get this and protest. But Jesus is firm with Peter and will not be deterred from His mission. Jesus can see Satan at work here through Peter.
- And this is perhaps the most challenging part of this passage. Jesus makes it clear that if you want to follow him, you: i) have to let him lead; ii) embrace suffering; and iii) sacrifice yourself to save yourself.
