Romans 16:27 (New International Version)
27 to the only wise God be glory for ever through Jesus Christ! Amen.
That is the end of the letter to the Romans. Our chief end, according to the Westminster Shorter Catechism, is ‘to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever’.
Why should we give glory to God? The preceding verses give three reasons.
First, God is able to establish us. The gospel of Jesus Christ, transmitted by Paul, makes enormous demands on the hearers – to give their all to God. Yet God enables this response to be made, and to establish those who respond to the gosel like a house built on a solid foundation, and to secure them against the attacks of the devil.
Second, God has revealed his plan for the ages. In the past it was hidden. Now it is made known.
Third, the Gentiles are part of it. Anyone, of any background, can be part of it. It is not restricted to a particular group of people. Through faith, the way to pleasing God is open to all.
In the light of this, what shall we do? Give glory to God!
